This is an infection of the bone that can occur after fractures, surgeries, or wounds near the bone, usually caused by bacteria. It is more common in people with weakened immune systems, diabetes, open fractures (where the bone is exposed to the outside environment), or following surgery.
The main symptoms of osteomyelitis or fracture-related infections include:
Localized pain in the affected area
Redness, warmth, and swelling
Persistent drainage from surgical wounds
Fistulas (openings in the skin near the infection that drain pus)
Fever
Treatment usually requires a timely combination of antibiotics and surgery including surgical debridement, bone stabilization (by removing, replacing, or retaining fixation hardware), and bone reconstruction in cases with bone defects. Each case must be assessed and managed individually.
